Con los aportes de la ONG CANOA en Argentina recibimos la siguiente introducción:

CANOA es una ONG en la que abordamos diferentes problemáticas del hábitat popular junto a los sectores populares en el ámbito local, desde el año 1988. Desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria trabajamos junto a instituciones intermedias y organizaciones sociales, en la elaboración de propuestas para el mejoramiento del Hábitat Popular.

A través de programas y proyectos queremos contribuir a consolidar una sociedad democrática, participativa, solidaria, capaz de construir un escenario social diferente al que se nos presenta como único y natural, caracterizado por la pobreza y la exclusión.

En el marco de las experiencias de hábitat desarrolladas por Canoa, ya sea en el ámbito de los barrios periféricos de la ciudad de Santa Fe como en las comunidades de la costa santafesina, observamos que el protagonismo de las mujeres adquiere preponderancia, cualquiera fuere la temática que convoca: salud, vivienda, trabajo, emprendimientos productivos, tierra, servicios, violencia, seguridad ciudadana. Las mujeres sostienen y consolidan el ritmo de trabajo en la mayoría de nuestras experiencias.

Trabajamos desde la perspectiva de género apuntando al fortalecimiento de los liderazgos de las mujeres y a la participación de éstas en la toma de decisiones, contribuyendo a la profundización de los procesos democráticos y al “empoderamiento” de la sociedad civil.

En un contexto de creciente desigualdad social, la desigualdad de genero es parte constitutiva y la discriminación hacia las mujeres abarca todos los aspectos de su vida, por eso es fundamental trabajar en la construcción de un hábitat que las incluya, las contenga y las visibilice para iniciar un camino de equidad entre varones y mujeres.

La ciudad es hoy el ámbito elegido por excelencia para las migraciones poblacionales, del campo a la urbe y del interior hacia las grandes metrópolis, por las múltiples opciones laborales y culturales que ofrece. Pero también es la ciudad el lugar de mayor exclusión social, segregación territorial y diferencias económicas.

En relación a las consultas realizadas aportamos nuestra mirada como ONG de Hábitat Popular.

Hello Everyone, My name is Dinah Amankwah, a lecturer in English language. My consultancy advocates gender equality among other issues. I am working with women from Northern Ghana. These women are constantly subjected to violent cultural practices– abduction and forced marriages in order to secure dowry for the menfolk. Women in the North have no right to property. Fathers do not believe in girl education because girls will marry and go away. Though it is an agricultural community and unskilled women do the bulk of farm work and largely cater for the children, they cannot own land.

I have worked mainly in Africa advocating for women’s land, property and housing rights and I currently volunteer my services to the Intiative for Gender Equality and Development in Africa (IGED-Africa), located in Ghana.

My Name is Kathie Pruden Nansel I live and work in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. I currently work with street involved men and women. I am a long time member of a working group here in Saskaoton called Passion For Action Aganist Homelessness. We are very active and have made some documentaries that cna be found on youtube – search homelesness in Saskatoon.

I mostly work with Aboriginal women as our Aboriginal population is very high here, so are the number of women living below poverty, and often living on the streets. We have a housing crisis here in our city as the city booms and grows the price of rent often forces women to choose between food or rent. Many fmailies have been disjointed due to the lack of afforable housing, children have been placed into care (Socail Services) with stipulations that the mothers must find adequate housing in order for them to have their children returned into their care. As this is a daunting task for these women, often the cycle of addictions, violence and street invovlement follow their drastic feelings of failure.

Here in our city we recently completed a large research project involving Aboriginal men and women who told their stories. It was heart breaking but also thought provoking and many new things were learned. Here in our city women tend to “Couch Surf” staying at friends or families or temperary partners in order to have a warm place to sleep. This is always short term such as 3- 4 days then they move on to another place.

I look forward to reading and learning the many other issues, barriers and success stories this discussion forum will bring.

I represent Eka Skhiladze from Women’s Information Center,Georgia; Established in 2000 the Women’s Information Centre (WIC) supports women’s NGOs and promotes women’s leadership. The organisation manages a resource centre in Tbilisi that offers assistance to women’s NGOs, initiative groups and individuals. WIC is a co-founder of the Coalition of women’s NGOs in Georgia and a member of the international organisations ‘WAVE-Women against Violence Europe’, Network of East – West Women (NEWW), European Directory for Women in ICT, Global Fund for Women. The Centre has close links with European organisations. WIC has its’ resource centre, which renders assistance directly to women NGOs, initiative groups and individual persons, as well as other civil society and international organizations. Resource centre is equipped with library with resources on women rights and gender issues. WIC has representations in different regions of Georgia. Organization is as a bridge organization between the policy makers and grassroots organization and aims to contribute to political, economical and social conditions of Georgian women through perfection of legislative basis, improve access to information and awareness rising on their rights and opportunities. We work on international, regional, national and grassroots level. We focus on advocacy/lobbying/public policy, informational and educational activities, direct help, charity and non-profit enterprise. WIC has worked in partnership with International Organizations and Funds (UN Trust Fund, OSCE, ODIHR, SDC and etc) . At present WIC is an implementing partner of UN Women on the Norway-funded ‘Women for Equality, Peace and Development in Georgia’ project, which supports IDP and conflict-affected women’s groups to advance gender equality.

There is no alternative for the right of house for any human beings. Whether this is man or woman, He/she has to live under a roof. This is the basic need. The fundamental question is regarding the right over the house and land. As a man of free thought, i agree with the equal participation of both men and women to establish equal right on the property. There are some religious vagueness or state law barriers. We have to overcome by creating awareness among the educated people, law maker, governmental institution etc.

Hi everyone, am Michael Nmai Maxwell. I am glad for this initiative as this if implemented seriously, it will go a long way to obliterate the negative of women not worthy to own a land or house.

Now as director of non-profit organization, Raleigh Ghana I travel a lot and do participate in many policy formulations and have derived many experiences. What I think can be done effectively to achieve this goal is to:

Make rule of law and institutional democracy effective, particularly in the over-coming of violence and discrimination against women on land and housing acquisition.

We have found a lot of not in my back door opposing our project. they state that they do not want low income housing but my feeling is there are also other reasons but not stated.
We are not the only low income project that is getting a lot of pressure from communitys.

Most of the low income housing serve women, women in canada are the lowest paid $ 8.80 here in alberta so finding good affordable housing in not posible ( market housing is $850 per month for 1 brm. And if you add children wow the rent goes higher.
Housing is very important to women and if not housing children are apprented and the women become homeless.

i also see a lot of discrimination to renting to none caucasian women. i really free sorry because the women fill out application is turn down with really no excuse. It is a really sad day that here in canada this is going on. Equality is just a word to keep the oppression of women and women of races we need to change this!

My name is Elda Gjergji and I am currently working as head of social services department at the municipality of Elbasan as well as pedagogue at “Aleksander Xhuvani” University, Department of Civic Education, Faculty of Social Sciences in Elbasan, Albania.

My background for my undergraduate degrees are in social sciences and business administration. I graduated from the Faculty of History and Philosophy, Department of Linguistics and Literature at University of Elbasan in 1998, and continued my studies at the Faculty of Economics, University of Elbasan, where I graduated in Business Administration. I have completed both of these majors with excellent results.
During the academic years 2000 – 2001 I was a post graduated student at European Regional Master on Human Rights and Democracy in South East Europe, jointly organized by the Universities of Sarajevo, Faculty of Social Science and University of Bologna, Faculty of Political Sciences, both held in Sarajevo and Italy.
Actually I’m an International Relations’s Ph.D. student at University of Tirana, Faculty of History and Philosophy.

As my current occupation dictates, I have been actively involved with human rights issues and have a huge experience with dealing and managing these issues. There are a number of coordinations and recommendations of social services I have carried out for all five vulnerable groups (minors, women, elderly people, people with disabilities and minorities) in Elbasan city. Also, have been involved in writing, ensuring the applicable standards and processing and managing of many projects directly related with interest of social services for all these groups at all levels. So there is a number of rehabilitation centers, schools, kindergartens, normally operating in Elbasan.

Working with social services and especially with vulnerable groups I was involved as a local expert for Budgeting Child Rights Policies in Elbasan district, a joint project of Save the Children Interational NGO and Municipality of Elbasan for several months. Also, I was a local expert for Social Area Plan Office where I was responsible for all social activities and servives for vulnerable groups of public and non public NGOs in Elbasan city. These experiences focused me on the analysis from the institutional context in which public policies and strategies, as well as programmes and projects are developed for improvement of the situation of certain groups of our society, which are facing risks of discrimination, poverty and social exclusion.

Furthermore, beside work I also have been actively involved in teaching at “Aleksander Xhuvani” University, Department of Civic Education, and Faculty of Social Sciences in Elbasan. My commitment in undergraduate teaching have been accomplished by developing and teaching of two courses: “Education of Human Rights” and “Civic Education” since 2002.

My name is Julia Gregoire and I am a housing support and outreach worker with Nazareth House in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Our mandate as a transition home is to help women recovering from addictions and help them find housing afterwards.

I am very new to this position, but housing and homelessness is something that is very important to me. My personal area of interest in housing is surrounding the LGBTQ community and the rights of transgendered people in particular when it comes to safe shelters and transitional housing.

My hope is that even if I cannot contribute much, that I will learn much while participating in this group.

Hi, Nice to meet everyone, My name is Debbie D Frost, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, I am an activist, advocate and researcher with a focus on poverty, housing and homelessness and a social work background. Since 1996 I have been activily involved in these issues at the local provincial and national level. As a board member of Canada Without Poverty I try my best to ensure people have a voice at all levels of government.

Presently we are doing education around the human rights documents as people dont understand the language or what they mean. We are starting to use human rights arguements in our appeals with housing and social services. I serve on several boards and am active with Several groups in peticular around housing is a group called Passion For Action Against Homelessness (PAAH). In December PAAH, launched a homeless project including a video which can be found on youtube, If anyone is interested it is called “Nowhere to Go, Homeless in Saskatoon” Its in two parts.

As for myself I have lived in and out of poverty all my life, I am a single parent of 52 with three grown children, 9 grandchildren and two children still at home. My passion is fighting for the rights of those who cant fight or are unable to have a voice.

My hope is to not end the discussions here, but to continue on sharing knowledge and information, looking at how we can all work together now and in the future.

I am looking forward to the discussions and getting to know all of you.

I’m Leilani Farha – the focal point for North America. By way of introduction, I am a human rights lawyer in Ottawa, Canada and the Executive Director of the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA). CERA is an economic and social rights organization focused on addressing discrimination and inequality in housing. We undertake a variety of projects: one-on-one case work (investigation, mediation, litigation) with people who have experienced discrimination in housing (80% of our clients are poor women, many with disabilities), training/education, political advocacy, and eviction prevention. CERA coordinates the Women’s Housing Equality Network, the only national women’s organization in Canada focused on women’s housing, homelessness and poverty. CERA uses international human rights law and mechanisms in all of our projects.

I have worked on women’s housing, land and property rights domestically and internationally since the mid 1990s. I have been particularly interested and involved in ensuring international human rights law is interpreted, applied and developed in ways that protect women’s economic, social and cultural rights. I have engaged the UN system – treaty monitoring bodies, Special Procedures, and political bodies – a fair bit in this regard.

I helped coordinate the North American regional consultation on women’s housing rights hosted by the then UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, Miloon Kothari in October 2005. Hello – my name is Sabine and I work in the Secretariat of the International Land Coalition (www.landcoalition.org), a global network of civil society and farmers’ organizations, United Nations agencies, international organizations, and research institutes united by a shared committment to advancing a pro-poor land agenda. Currently, our coalition is composed of 116 member organizations in 50 countries.

ILC members work toward a shared vision in which “secure and equitable access to and control over land reduces poverty, promotes sustainable development, and contributes to identity, dignity, and inclusion.” As such, women’s land rights are a core area of work for us.

As Programme Officer at the ILC Secretariat I am responsible for ILC activities on women’s land rights, including through facilitating collaboration of ILC members, overseeing ILC-funded projects, such as research in Latin America, pilot activities promoting women’s legal empowerment at the community-level undertaken in 2009/10 and a three-year research project (2007-2010) in Eastern and Southern Africa on linking research and action (www.landcoalition.org/global-initiatives/womens-land-rights/linking-research-and-action-0), but also participating in other initiatives and partnerships, for instance the organising committee of the Global Gathering of Women Pastoralists.

I am interested to follow this discussion as I am new to the area of housing rights but recognise that there is a lot of overlap between housing rights and land rights.

My name is Jade Emory. I am a retired university instructor and psychoanalyst who has been homeless for over 9 years because the State of Hawaii has deliberately chosen to defy the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 by refusing to accommodate my breathing disability.
I absolutely require private rural housing so that I can breathe clean air instead of neighbors’ toxic smokes and chemicals. There is plenty of such rural housing unused here in the area of Waimanalo in which I stay in my car.
The state refuses to obey our own laws and it has forced me to become a housing rights activist. Without legal help I sued both the state and the federal housing agencies, but they fought duplicitously and the corrupt courts ruled in their favor, even though I had the truth, the proof and the laws entirely on my side.
I have been published in local media and I continually assert for housing rights, especially for Native Hawaiians, who comprise 46% of our homeless population, for women, the elderly and the disabled. I further assert for the rights of the many Micronesians whose home islands were bombed by the USA and who have come to Hawaii for medical help with the heinous repercussions of radioactive exposure from American disregard, only to have their medical assistance terminated.
I am honolred and grateful to be part of this project.

I’m Leilani Farha. I am a human rights lawyer in Canada and the Executive Director of the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA). CERA is an economic and social rights organization focused on addressing discrimination and inequality in housing. We undertake a variety of projects: one-on-one case work (investigation, mediation, litigation) with people who have experienced discrimination in housing (80% of our clients are poor women, many with disabilities), training/education, political advocacy, and eviction prevention. CERA coordinates the only national women’s organization in Canada focused on women’s housing, homelessness and poverty. CERA uses international human rights law and mechanisms in all of our projects.

I have worked on women’s housing, land and property rights domestically and internationally since the mid 1990s. I have been particularly interested and involved in ensuring international human rights law is interpreted, applied and developed in ways that protect women’s economic, social and cultural rights. I have engaged the UN system – treaty monitoring bodies, Special Procedures, and political bodies – a fair bit in this regard.

I am very pleased to be part of this project – I already feel connected to an amazing group of people and we have only just begun our work together. I also appreciate the use of technology in our work — it makes it so much more interesting!

I am a human rights professional from Bosnia and Herzegovina, living in Serbia. I have an MA in Theory and Practice of Human Rights and I’m a PhD candidate in Gender Studies. Professionally I have mainly worked on ethnic minority issues, especially Roma, and generally on social inclusion issues of various vulnerable groups. When it comes to housing, I’ve conducted research on housing rights of Roma throughout Europe, as well as housing rights of refugees and IDPs in southeastern Europe.

Within this project I will be covering Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Looking forward to working with you all!

My name is Mariaconcetta Patti, you can call me Mariko, I’m Italian from Sicily. I studied Political Sciences and I’m going to finish a Master degree on Gender Studies at Barcelona University. I have been working in different NGO on the defence and promotion on human rights, with special focus on ESCR, violence against woman and environment, in Bosnia, Guatemala, Barcelona and Argentina.

I’m Vanesa Valiño, I’m Spanish, Catalan, from Barcelona. I have also a degree in Political Science and a Master on Gender Studies. I have been working in the Observatori of Economical, Social and Cultural Rights (DESC) on housing matters from a feminist perspective for the last eight years. In this sense, for example, we organized the Regional Consultation on Housing and Women done by the last Rapporteur Miloon Kothari in Barcelona in 2006. We are also involved in local campaigns. At that moment we are denouncing the situation of the families over indebted that because of the crisis can’t pay their mortgage and are evicted.

The both of us will be working as focal point in Western Europe.

Hi everyone,

This is Mayra Gomez, I am an activist working in the area of women’s economic, social and cultural rights. Prior to coming on to this project, I worked as the Senior Expert on Women and Housing Rights and the Women and Housing Rights Programme Coordinator with the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE). Over the years, I have worked on various issues related to women’s housing and land rights, including women’s experiences in slums and informal settlements, the housing rights of displaced women and girls, women’s land rights within the context of land reform, and women’s housing rights within the context of HIV/AIDS, as well as within the context of domestic violence. I have been very fortunate in that work to get to know amazing and inspiring people all over the world fighting for women’s rights and women’s equality. Much of my advocacy has been at the international level, including with the UN Human Rights Council and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), but I have also worked at regional and national levels.

I am very excited about working on this project!! I think it represents a real opportunity to advance women’s rights in very important (and much needed) ways. I am also very happy that the approach of the project is one which will engage a wide and diverse range of voices. Together I know we will be able to make a difference!!

Mi nombre es Mayra Gomez, y yo soy una activista que trabaja en el área de los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales de las mujeres. Antes de llegar a este proyecto, he trabajado como Experta sobre Mujeres y el Derecho a la Vivienda y como Coordinadora del Programa sobre Mujeres y el Derecho a la Vivienda con El Centro por el Derecho a la Vivivenda contra los Desalojos (COHRE). Con los años, he trabajado sobre varios temas relacionados con los derechos de las mujeres a vivienda y a la tierra, incluyendo las experiencias de las mujeres en los barrios pobres y asentamientos informales, el derecho a la vivienda de las mujeres y niñas desplazadas, los derechos de las mujeres a la tierra en el contexto de la reforma agraria y derechos de la mujer a la vivienda en el contexto de la SIDA, y en el contexto de la violencia doméstica. He sido muy afortunada en conocer a gente muy inspirador de todo el mundo luchando por los derechos de la mujer y la igualdad de la mujer. Gran parte de mi trabajo ha sido a nivel internacional, en particular con el Consejo de Derechos Humanos y el Comité para la Eliminación de la Discriminación contra la Mujer (CEDAW), pero también he trabajado a nivel regional y nacional.

Estoy muy contenta poder colaborar con Uds. en este proyecto! Creo que representa una verdadera oportunidad para promover los derechos de la mujer en maneras muy importantes (y muy necesarias) . He sido muy afortunada en conocer a gente muy inspirador de todo el mundo luchando por los derechos de la mujer y la igualdad de la mujer. Gran parte de mi trabajo ha sido a nivel internacional, en particular con el Consejo de Derechos Humanos y el Comité para la Eliminación de la Discriminación contra la Mujer (CEDAW), pero también he trabajado a nivel regional y nacional. Estoy muy contenta poder colaborar con Uds. en este proyecto! Creo que representa una verdadera oportunidad para promover los derechos de la mujer en maneras muy importantes (y muy necesarias) . My name is Mariana (you can call me Mari). I’m a Journalist and I work in the support team of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing in Brazil. Since my graduation course I have a special interest in themes related to the Human Rights (my graduation conclusion project was about the media and the violence against woman).

I’ve also worked in a brazilian organization called Intervozes (that struggles for the democratization of the media and for the right to comunication) and in the international office of the World Social Forum in Brazil.

Today I also study linguistics and literature (Portuguese and Spanish) in São Paulo University.

Well, I’m very excited in participating with you in this project!

Yo me llamo Mariana (ustedes puende llamarme Mari). Yo soy periodista y trabajo en el equipo de apoyo a la Relatoría Especial de la ONU para la Vivienda Adecuada. Desde mi curso de graduación tengo especial interés en los temas relacionados con los Derechos Humanos (mi proyecto de conclusión de curso fué acerca de la violencia contra las mujeres y los medios de comunicación).

Antes de llegar aqupi, yo he trabajado en una organización brasileña llamada Intervozes (que lucha por la democratización de los medios de comunicación y por el derecho humano a la comunicación) y en la oficina internacional del Foro Social Mundial en Brasil.

Hoy día yo también estudio linguística y literatura (Portugués y Español) en la Universidad de São Paulo.

Bueno, estoy muy feliz de participar de este nuevo proyecto con ustedes!

  Presently i am part of a coalition working for the enactment of the Sexual offenses and matrimonial causes Bill and also the thirty percent quota for female representation in the upcoming elections.

One issue affecting women in Quebec is that Quebec does not recognize rights of women in relationships outside of marriage, regardless of the length of time of the relationship. Only if there is a legal contract would a woman have a claim on property in case of breakup of the relationship or death of the partner.
